Overview

I do not see video games as a form of art. I suppose it depends what aspect of a game you are analyzing in terms of framing an argument. The two potential segments I see for debate are a) playing the video game and this skill as being considered art or 2) the graphic design of games being an art. In both cases I don’t think that either are art forms. The first is no doubt a skill, but twiddling your thumbs and pushing buttons in reaction to on screen displays is hardly an art form. In the second kind, the design of a game itself leaves more room for debate.
There is no doubt that to design a virtual environment takes skill and creativity, however I do not see the manipulation of a design software program as art. It differs from other art forms such as music or painting in that the medium that is used to design the work. I feel that for something to be art it should be hands on and involve more skill than manipulation of a mouse and keyboard. There is also the issue of self expression that I feel is not articulated in the same degree when done through graphic design than it is through music, dance, or acting.
Ultimately, I feel that there is a fine line between the world of art and that of video game design, and though I can certainly see an overlap between the two I find it hard to make the leap to the conclusion that video game design is in fact an art form.
